There will be as much musical diversity as there will be variety of foods at next month's Taste of Syracuse.

 

The musical lineup for the two-day, free-admission event in and around Clinton Square covers everything from high school rock bands to veteran Central New York bands to the daughter of one of the biggest pop stars in the business to a classic rocker whose songs have been bellowed by happy party-goers for the last 28 years.

 

National headliners are Alexa Ray Joel, piano-playing-and-singing daughter of Billy Joel and Christie Brinkley in her first festival appearance ever, and classic rocker Eddie Money.

 

The Syracuse Area Music Awards will hold its third outdoor session in conjunction with Taste of Syracuse on the main stage June 2. The awards, which began in 1993 in the Landmark Theatre, will feature performances by Simple Life, The Donna Colton Band, C Jack Motown Revue and Todd Hobin. Awards for best CDs in 10 categories will be announced around the music.

 

Ö The Central New York Blues Orchestra will perform with trombonist Tom "Bones" Malone at 4:30 p.m. June 3 on the main stage. The CNYBO is an offshoot of the Central New York Jazz Orchestra. Malone was a member of the Blues Brothers.

 

Ö The emerging artist stage will showcase bands with musicians still in high school and top Central New York bands still rising in popularity. Ska standouts Razbari Sumthing headline at 10 p.m. June 2, and hard rockers Brand New Sin headline at 10 p.m. June 3.

 

Ö The Jazz Kids of Syracuse will start with The Noah Kellman Trio with Kellman on keyboards, Spencer Murphy on bass and Mike Tysko on drums. Another 10 high school players and a couple alumni will join them in a jam. The set kicks off the main stage action at noon June 3.

 

Ö Skip Murphy's House Party pairs the veteran Syracuse harmonica player with guitarist Bruce Tetley and keyboardist Dave Liddy and other old friends for reggae, blues, swing and a dash of funk. The set starts at 3 p.m. June 3 on the second stage.

Alexa sang, played piano (backed by a three-man band), and chatted with the audience. (Sample banter: “My mom said, ‘That song is so good. It’s by Ray Charles, right?’ I said, ‘Uh, no, Mom, it’s by me.’ ”) Brinkley sat close to the stage, bobbed to the beats, and waved her table votive like a lighter at the end, while the more subdued Piano Man kept a low profile in the back. “I’m the luckiest mom in the world,” Brinkley gushed. “She literally came out singing. She would pop out these songs when she was 3, and I would say to Billy, ‘You should record that.’ ” The proud papa always knew his daughter had talent. “She’s pretty much doing this on her own. She had perfect pitch as a baby,” he said. “I guess it’s genetic.”

Diminutive in stature, pronounced in facial features, and a natural singer of songs (miraculously, given that Kelly Osbourne is the rule and Bonnie Raitt the exception when it comes to musical celebrity offspring), Joel is tiptoeing into the family business.

 

Armed with no album, no team of handlers, and none of the fanfare that characteristically accompanies a rock-royalty debut, Joel brought a three-piece band and 10 songs, all but one original, to Great Scott on Monday. And while there were hardly enough patrons in the club to log a couple of dozen hits on her MySpace page, Joel, seated at her Yamaha electric piano, plowed valiantly through her 50-minute set of sturdy pop-rock tunes and contemplative singer-songwriter fare. There's nothing remotely indie or trendy about Joel. As a songwriter she's clearly absorbed the classics -- Carole King, Elton John, Billy Joel. As a singer she's quite frankly a powerhouse -- a nimble, soulful vocalist with genuine personality and a wonderfully original feel for phrasing.

As a performer, well, she's green. Joel announced each song with a stiff ''This next one is called . . ." A couple of them -- ''Far Away," most notable for its pedestrian chord changes and journal-entry lyrics, and a '50s-inflected toe-tapper that she should give to her father -- will surely be the source of a cringe in later years. But Joel's gifts are obvious despite her inexperience, and so is her intelligence. How clever to be honing her craft in small, sparsely filled rooms, for the curious few, away from the media glare. And how refreshingly novel.

Singer/songwriter Alexa Ray Joel (tickets | music) will head out on an 18-city tour this fall, backing her self-released and independently distributed debut EP, "Sketches."

The New York-based performer, the daughter of Billy Joel (tickets | music) and Christie Brinkley, will kick off her tour Sept. 24 in Portland, OR, opening for Teddy Geiger and Holly Brook, before moving into the headlining portion of the outing starting Sept. 26 in Spokane, WA.

 

The first half of her itinerary concentrates on the Pacific Northwest and West Coast before sending her back to the East Coast in November. Joel will make a number of appearances at Hard Rock Cafes around the country, something she also did earlier this year.

 

The singer's first recorded effort, "Sketches," officially released in late August, contains six originals, and can be obtained through iTunes and also by accessing Joel's official website.

 

Joel was in the news recently after she passed out backstage before an early September performance at New York's Marist College. Addressing the fainting spell on her MySpace site, Joel assured her fans that the incident was nothing to worry about.

 

"I'm absolutely fine, and I was only in the hospital for a few hours," she wrote. ""I pretty much exhausted myself to the point that I couldn't do the show...I ended up fainting from stress, lack of sleep, and just overall exhaustion."

 

Joel also cited her mother's well-publicized divorce proceedings with Peter Cook as a contributing factor to her stress level.

Former model Christie Brinkley has filed for divorce from her husband of 10 years Peter Cook.

 

Last month it was revealed that Cook had had an affair with an 18 year old employee Diana Bianchi; Brinkley and Cook have one child together, and eight year old daughter, Sailor.

 

Cook’s lawyer David Aronson, confirmed that divorce papers had been filed, and according to MSN said: "We are told that a divorce action has been commenced in Suffolk County, and we have agreed to accept service of those papers,"

 

He added that Cook "regrets that this happened. He was hopeful that he and Ms Brinkley would be able to work their way through this problem and put their marriage back together, but obviously she has decided otherwise.

 

"He has instructed us that we are to handle this matter in as amicable and private a fashion as possible under the circumstances, and he hopes that everyone out there can respect the privacy of Christie and the children.”

 

Cook adopted Brinkley’s son Jack, 11, from her marriage to Richard Taubman; Brinkley has another daughter from her relationship with Billy Joel, the 20 year old Alexa Ray Joel.

 

It is as yet unsure hoe Brinkley and Cook will split their property and custody of their children.

Christie's 20-year-old daughter with BILLY JOEL reportedly wrote on her Internet blog, "I ended up fainting from stress, lack of sleep and just overall exhaustion about five minutes before the show... I woke up to find myself in an ambulance rushing me to a local hospital near the campus, and it was -- overall -- a pretty scary night." She is reportedly now fine.

And just two months after the news broke that Christie's husband, attorney PETER COOK, was having an affair with his 19-year-old assistant, the former supermodel has reportedly begun the process of filing divorce papers against her estranged spouse.

DAVID ARONSON, a lawyer from Peter Cook's attorney's office, said on Thursday that he has yet to see the complaint, but understands that a summons has already been filed.

Aronson also released the following statement regarding the dissolution of Brinkley and Cook's 10-year marriage: "We're trying to keep as low a profile as possible. (Peter) was hopeful that they could work out their difficulties and get on with their marriage. He loves his family. Peter is very saddened that it has come to this point. But he acknowledges that's where they are. His intention (and his lawyers have been instructed to) handle this as amicably and private as possible under the circumstances. We're not looking to get into he said she said. It's just not appropriate."

Writing on her MySpace.com blog site, the singer admits the stress of her touring schedule and her mother's very public marriage problems left her anxious throughout the day before the show.

 

And it all came to a head five minutes before she was due to hit the stage at the college with her quartet.

 

She writes, "I pretty much exhausted myself to the point that I couldn't do the show... I ended up fainting from stress, lack of sleep, and just overall exhaustion.

Peter Cook's lawyer is confirming a report that Brinkley filed for divorce on Long Island, New York, ending a ten-year marriage.

The beginning of the end came over the summer, when it emerged that Cook had an affair with a teenager he'd hired to work at his architecture firm.

The couple has an eight-year-old daughter, and Cook had adopted Brinkley's son from another one of her marriages. Cook's lawyer says it's too early to discuss things like custody.

Among the super model's other ex-husbands is Billy Joel, who wrote the song "Uptown Girl" for her.

Christie Brinkley met with her estranged husband, architect Peter Cook, and his parents on Tuesday, according to the New York Daily News.

"I'd rather not comment," Brinkley, 52, told the paper as she left her $22 million estate in New York's Hamptons after the visit from the Cooks. "I just don't want to fuel this anymore."

Although Cook, 47, has been photographed recently wearing his wedding ring, Brinkley was not wearing hers on Tuesday.

The appearance marks Brinkley's return to the Hamptons, where she and Cook lived until Brinkley learned that Cook had carried on a year-long affair with Diana Bianchi, now 19, whom he'd hired to work as an assistant in his office.

After Brinkley's July 12 announcement that she was separating from Cook after 10 years of marriage, the "devastated" CoverGirl model took her kids Jack, 11, and Sailor, 8, to Los Angeles to be with her parents and has kept out of sight ever since.

Cook, who has publicly apologized for his infidelity, arrived at about 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the gated home he and Brinkley had shared; he was followed by his elderly parents, Harry and Jean, who were driven in a town car from their Long Island home, according to the Daily News.

After a 15-minute visit, Brinkley led the caravan out of the estate in her tan Lexus SUV, the paper reports.

NEW YORK - Christie Brinkley's songbird daughter, Alexa Ray Joel, said her mother's public betrayal may put the supermodel off marriage for good, according to a published report.

``I don't think my mom will be getting married again anytime soon,'' Joel told a friend, according to Star magazine. ``It's going to take her a long time to get over this. As for trusting someone enough to marry again -- I don't know.''

Joel, 20, is Brinkley's daughter with piano man Billy Joel and a budding singer in her own right. Brinkley also has an 11-year-old son, Jack, with third husband Richard Taubman and 7-year-old daughter Sailor Lee with current husband Peter Cook.

Brinkley, 52, recently fled the Hamptons with the two youngest children in tow after Cook's infatuation and affair with 19-year-old assistant Diana Bianchi.

Billy Joel’s Kid To Release First Record

Feeling old? If not, this should do it. Tomorrow, Alexa Ray Joel, 21-year-old daughter of Billy Joel and Christie Brinkley, releases her first record, “Sketches.”

Alexa Ray has decided to skip the regular route of going to a major record company and instead will release her debut EP (short for ‘extended play’) on her own independent label.

Fans will be able to buy it from her Web site — www.alexarayjoel.com — as well as download it from all the usual places on the Internet.

You can already hear three of the songs on Alexa Ray’s MySpace page. They include “The Heart of Me,” “Come Home to Me Do” and “Sapphire Night.” They are all bluesy pop numbers in which Alexa accompanies herself on piano.

She’s more Melissa Manchester circa 1973 than Billy Joel, but you can definitely pick up Dad’s genetic influence in her recordings.

In any case, Alexa Ray is here to stay, and she’s serious about her career. She joins a not-so-select group of second-generation pop stars like Julian Lennon, his brother Sean, Ben and Sally Taylor (Carly Simon and James Taylor's kids), the Wilson Phillips gang, Ricky Nelson’s sons and Sting’s son Joe Sumner's group Fiction Plane.

Interestingly, most of those artists have opted not to sign with big record companies and put out their own CDs.

Some, like Ben Taylor and Julian Lennon, started with major labels and then went indie. Sean Lennon’s done the reverse for his upcoming release, opting to go with family company Capitol. His first album was on a small label.

Of course, cryptographers will pour over Alexa’s lyrics to see if there’s anything about her mom’s soured marriage to a philandering architect.

But something tells me the message — if there is one — will be fairly hidden. The girl has more important things to sing about, I should think.
